India’s First Government-Backed Creative Tech Institute

In a significant move to support India’s growing creator economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated Rs 400 crore to set up the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai.

The announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who stated that the institute would be dedicated to digital creators, VFX artists, animators, game developers, and those shaping the future of content in India.

Why It Matters: The Creator Economy Is Booming

India has over 80 million content creators, spanning YouTube, Instagram, gaming, film, and AR/VR platforms. But many lack access to formal training, industry tools, and global exposure.

This new institute is designed to fix that by:

  • Offering specialized courses in animation, AI-led content tools, game design, and digital storytelling.
  • Providing real industry labs and mentorship by top creators.
  • Enabling collaboration with global production studios and platforms.

Case in point:
India’s animation industry grew by 29% in 2023, yet 60% of hiring companies reported a shortage of skilled professionals. IICT aims to close that gap.

Vaishnaw: “PM Modi Has a Deep Vision for Creators”

Speaking at a creators’ summit in Delhi, Vaishnaw said:

“PM Modi understands how powerful India’s creators are. This Rs 400 crore institute will empower them with global-class tools, training, and infrastructure.”

He added that Mumbai was chosen because of its legacy in film, television, OTT, and now, creator-driven content.

The move isn’t just about education—it’s a strategic investment in India’s global cultural voice.

Whether through viral videos, indie games, or animated storytelling, Indian creators now influence millions across borders. This institute gives them a launchpad with structure and scale.

The Rs 400 crore allocation for IICT marks a shift in how India views creative work—not just as art, but as a powerful industry.
